History

Plantation life was a large part of South Carolina’s rich history. The first English settler in Hilton Head was John Barnwell in 1717, who received a grant of 1,000 acres in what is now HHP. But the greater HHI did not become well-known until the arrival of William Elliott, who was the first planter to successfully raise a crop of Sea Island cotton. By 1860, HHI was home to 24 plantations.

HHI was incorporated as a town in 1983, and it is now home to several “plantations,” supporting over 30,000 residents. These private gated communities have been named plantations, but they do not produce cotton. Instead, lush golf courses, beautiful lakes, and stunning villas, like those found at HHP, are what make up the plantations of today’s HHI.
