Windmill Harbour Information and Highlights, Including ALL MLS Listings
Windmill Harbour is a vibrant 172-acre private residential community reserved for 500 residences. The community located on HHI adjacent to the Intracoastal Waterway offers beautiful vista views of the Intracoastal and saltwater marshes. The primary focal point of Windmill Harbour is a 15-acre inland harbour and it is also the home of the South Carolina Yacht Club and a 250-slip marina and lock system.
History
Windmill Harbour began in 1981 as a joint effort between Charles Fraser, Andres Deutsch and JR Richardson, who jointly engaged the Sea Pines Company to serve as the development arm of their partnership. In the mid-1980s, Mr. Fraser chose to sell the Sea Pines Company, and as WH was not part of that firm, Deutsch and Richardson assumed responsibility for the further development of the project. Initially, The Sea Pines Company had chosen a Southwestern style featuring an adobe look and a large windmill at the entrance. This design, however, was not embraced by the community. In response, the founders removed the windmill and the land plan changed to a mix of single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums in a more acceptable southern traditional style, similar to residences found in Charleston. As WH began to take shape, more and more homes were built in that style. This led to the evolution of the Charleston Lowcountry look one sees in WH today.
Location
The community is located on Hilton Head Island, right next to the Intracoastal Waterway. Hilton Head Island is a boot-shaped island that lies 20 miles by air northeast of Savannah, Georgia, and 90 miles south of Charleston, South Carolina.
Weather
HHI’s climate is ideal for those wanting to explore the outdoors and soak up the sunshine. The HHI area features a balmy, subtropical climate year-round.
It consists of semi- tropical, Lowcountry geography, including unspoiled sea marshes, creeks and lagoons, heavily wooded forests of tall pines, palmettos, magnolias and live oaks, and 12 miles of broad Atlantic beach.
